About the Club
A Brief History
The Spring Lake Live Liner Fishing Club was founded in 1977 by four
members of the Surf Kings, a Sea Girt fishing club. The Club was
officially incorporated in 1982. Those original members, Bob
Matthews, Fred DeJager, Howard Cannon and Bill MacGowan formed a
club that actively preached and pursued the method of fishing for
striped bass known as "live lining", specifically, alewife herring.
Live lining wasn't new, but because of the difficulty of keeping
bait alive, it was a method used by opportunity. If you happened to
catch a herring, you immediately hurried to the nearest fishable
location to present it to a striper. What Bob Matthews and the
others did was perfect ways of keeping herring alive long enough to
fish where and when conditions were best. The use of portable
aerated live wells and "penning" alwives revolutionized the way live
bait could be fished.

Mission Statement
The Spring Lake Live Liner Fishing Club has been active in local
surf fishing activities for over 20 years. Our name is derived from
the fact that many of the biggest trophy bass that we have caught
over the years were by “live lining” baitfish, notably herring.
As one of the
sponsoring clubs in the annual Invitational Striped Bass Tournament,
our members compete with clubs ranging from Sea Bright to Surf City
in a series of spring and fall tournaments. We also have a friendly
intra-club competition each year with team and individual trophies
handed out at our annual dinner. For the past 10 years, we have
sponsored a cash prize “button” tournament for New Jersey striper
addicts who fish the beaches, inlets, and rivers of the Jersey
Shore.
Despite the
club’s name the members fish using a variety of techniques including
a very active core group of fly rodders. Among members there is a
sharing of information and techniques at meetings as well as on the
beach.
In addition to
activities for members, we support conservation efforts through
several organizations such as the JCAA and RFA. We also participate
in local activities for enhancement of the environment. We welcome
into membership anyone who might want to share these kinds of
activities.
Meeting Notice
The Spring Lake Live Liner Fishing Club meets on the second Thursday
of each month at the Cornelius V. Kelly Community Center, Ocean
Road, Spring Lake Heights at 7:30 p.m.
